The Essex County
Coalition for Darfur is a
broadly-based coalition of churches, synagogues,
and concerned individuals working to end the
genocide in Darfur.
Our two main goals are to raise awareness of
the situation in Darfur, and to demand direct
action to end the genocide. From the beginning,
the Coalition has worked closely with
legislators, especially Senator Robert Menendez
and Congressman Donald Payne, to generate
support for Darfur, primarily through the Darfur
Peace and Accountability Act. The Coalition has
also formed a close relationship with the Darfur
Rehabilitation Project, a group of Darfurians
working to achieve peace and stability in the
region.

On April 11, 2006, the Coalition sponsored a Rally to
Save Darfur at Watchung Plaza in Montclair that
attracted almost 2,000 people from all over New Jersey.
Three weeks later, two buses left Montclair to join the
National Rally in Washington, D.C.
On April 29, 2007, the Coalition sponsored a second
Rally for Action to Save Darfur as part of the Global
Days for Darfur. Hundreds of people filled Union
Congregational Church in Montclair to pledge their
support.
