SAMPLE LETTERS

President Obama,

In April, the people of Sudan will go to the polls for their first election in twenty-four years. Most independent observers now agree that the conditions for a free and fair election simply do not exist – and that the end result will be to legitimize President al- Bashir, an indicted war criminal, and risk a return to all-out war.
While I appreciate your efforts to bring peace to Sudan, I am concerned about recent developments, including reports of renewed violence. I ask that you provide Congress and the American people with an update on the situation in Sudan – including a full report on the elections – as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
(Your Name)

Senator Menendez,

For many years, you have been a strong supporter of the people of Darfur, and we are grateful for all of your efforts. Today the people of Darfur and all of Sudan need your help more than ever,

I am writing to ask that you work with Congress over the next few weeks to recognize the problems with these elections and monitor the results. And because the next few months are so critical, I urge you to continue to work with your colleagues on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to secure justice for the people of Sudan.
